Facts About Wasps

A single wasp nest can produce between 1,000 and 2,000 new queen wasps per season. These new queens, along with male wasps called drones, are produced in the late spring and summer as the nest matures. Most of these new queens will not survive the winter, with only a small percentage going on to establish their own nests in the spring.

  • Production:

Wasp nests, particularly larger ones like the wasp nest on this page can produce a large number of queens.

  • Quantity:

An average nest will produce between 1,000 and 2,000 queens, around 20% of them will make it through the winter, and only about 5% will go on to start their own nests in the spring

  • Drones:

Drones, the male wasps, also emerge from the nest around the same time as the queens, and they are fertile males.

Although Wasps are natural pollinators and their nest building skills are a work of art, there are many risk factors associated with these pests which will be outlined below.

Wasp nests pose risks including painful and potentially dangerous stings, especially for those with allergies, and can also cause property damage if the nests are large or located in vulnerable areas. Additionally, abandoned nests can attract other pests, worsening the overall pest problem.

Stings and Allergic Reactions:

  • Wasps can sting multiple times, unlike bees, and will defend their nest aggressively.

  • Stings can be very painful and cause redness and swelling.

  • For individuals with allergies, wasp stings can trigger severe reactions like anaphylactic shock, which is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

  • Symptoms of anaphylactic shock include respiratory distress, facial swelling, and vomiting.

Health Risks in Specific Environments:

  • In commercial properties or areas with public access, active wasp nests can pose a serious safety risk due to the potential for stings and allergic reactions.

Difficulty of DIY Removal:

  • Attempting to remove a wasp nest without proper safety equipment and knowledge can be dangerous due to the risk of stings.

  • Disturbing a nest with DIY products can make the wasps more aggressive and increase the risk of stings.
